Masters of Harmony Make Fifth Appearance at Barbershop Harmony Society’s Midwinter Convention

The Barbershop Harmony Society’s Midwinter Convention is a showcase of barbershop harmony talent. It features past champions, as well as groups destined for future medalist performances. In 1990, the Masters of Harmony wowed the midwinter audience in Tucson. That performance proved the chorus’s fourth-place finish at the Kansas City International in 1989, its first appearance on the international stage, was not a fluke, but rather a preview of things to come. Later that year, the Masters won a chorus gold medal at the 1990 international contest in San Francisco. The Masters returned to midwinter conventions in Long Beach (1992), Riverside (2002), and Pasadena (2009).

The legendary 139th Street Quartet will kick off the 2014 Midwinter Convention on Thursday, January 30, with a performance aboard the Queen Mary. On Friday evening, January 31, the Masters of Harmony, winners of eight consecutive international chorus gold medals, will perform. The Friday Night Show will feature a full set from the current International Quartet Champion Masterpiece (all members of the Masters of Harmony), as well as sets by all other 2013 International Medalist quartets, a seniors quartet contest, and a youth chorus festival that includes 20 youth choruses from around the country. Since their first appearance a few years ago, these youth choruses have raised the excitement level of the midwinter conventions and reflect the growing popularity of barbershop style harmony among America’s young men.

From January 30 through February 2, the Long Beach Terrace Theater will host one of Barbershop Harmony Society’s most entertaining events. It is in easy walking distance of many world-class restaurants and nightlife spots with weather that is the envy of the rest of the country at this time of year.
