In 1996, the Masters of Harmony traveled by bus through one of America's most productive breadbaskets to deliver a cornucopia of high-level barbershop music at Modesto's Invitational Singing Festival. That same year, the Masters won International gold in Salt Lake City in a performance regarded by many who attended as the finest men's barbershop chorus performance they had ever witnessed. Twelve years later, the men of the Masters will travel even farther up California's storied central valley to kick off Sacramento's 2008 five-part concert series. They will take the stage as Barbershop Harmony Society's 2008 International Chorus Champion after winning Gold in Nashville with a performance that will be talked about for years to come, just like that legendary 1996 performance.
The Sacramento Community Concert Association dates to 1953 when a group of dedicated volunteers established a goal of bringing high quality performing artists to Sacramento as part of a prepaid subscription series. The success of the association can be seen in a partial list of legendary performers featured over the years: soloists such as Leontyne Price and Yehudi Menuhin, choral groups such as the Robert Shaw and Roger Wagner chorales, dance groups such as the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the American Ballet Company, and instrumental ensembles such as the Royal Philharmonic and Boston Pops orchestras.
Joining the Masters on stage for a concert of four-part Americana will be The Crush, a youthful Masters foursome rising rapidly into the upper levels of Society quartets. In addition, Masterpiece, a quartet made up of four men who have won gold medals with other quartets and whose existence is still measured in months, will perform.
The Masters of Harmony is proud to have this opportunity to add their name to the list of stellar performers who have graced the stage of Sacramento's Community Center Theater since it became home to this Series in 1981.
