On Saturday, April 19, the Masters of Harmony will perform in Bakersfield for the first time in several years, headlining a benefit sponsored by the Bakersfield Association for Retarded Citizens (BARC). This organization is renowned for its ability to assist the disadvantaged learn how to support themselves in ways that benefit both them and their communities. Bakersfield’s BARC organization has a long history of providing opportunities for the developmentally disabled to become self-supporting participants in the life of the community.
The show is a Saturday afternoon matinee in Bakersfield’s historic 1500-seat Fox Theater, an elegant building that is considered a community treasure. It opened on Christmas Day 1930, and was one of the last of its kind built during the golden era of the great theaters. In 1977, after 47 years in show business, the Fox went silent and it looked like it might succumb to the wrecking ball. However, in 1994, a determined effort by a group of community “Save the Fox” donors helped avert that fate.
The 100-plus men of the Masters of Harmony, directed by Mark Hale, are six-time international champions of the Barbershop Harmony Society. They bring a dynamic musical program that includes popular standards, Broadway show tunes, patriotic songs, as well as songs of faith, in the matchless four-part harmony for which they are widely known. You are sure to hear music that will touch your heartstrings and rekindle fond memories. The Masters will also feature VocalEase, current Far Western District quartet champion, and The Crush, a youthful quartet that's drawing national attention. Expedia, an up-and-coming foursome, will make a cameo appearance.
