Privacy policy
We want you to feel comfortable using this site. This page explains what we collect when you visit www.mastersofharmony.org, why, who else is involved, and the choices you have. Questions: info@mastersofharmony.org.
Who we are
This website belongs to the Masters of Harmony, the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We are a volunteer-run chorus. We do not sell, rent or trade personal information, and we do not use it for anything other than running the chorus and its website.
When you visit
Our own visit counts. To see which pages are useful, we count page views ourselves. For each page we keep: the page, the hour and day, the kind of device (phone, tablet or computer), how long the page was open and in use, the name of the site that sent you (such as google.com or facebook.com, never the full address), and which important links were used, such as ticket, donation and sign-up links. These records are anonymous: we do not store your IP address, your browser details, your name or anything that identifies you. A random visit number in a cookie ties the pages of one visit together and expires after 30 minutes without activity.
Our web host. Like every web server, our host, DreamHost, keeps standard access logs (address requested, IP address, browser, time) for security and troubleshooting, under its own retention policy.
Google Analytics and the Meta pixel. We also use Google Analytics to understand how visitors find and use the site, and the Meta (Facebook) pixel to measure how our posts and any promotions on Facebook and Instagram lead to visits, ticket purchases and sign-ups. These services set their own cookies and receive information about your visit (pages viewed, links used, your browser and IP address) under their own privacy policies. Google Analytics does not log or store IP addresses. See “Your choices” below to opt out.
Cookies
A cookie is a small file your browser keeps for a website. This site uses:
| Cookie | Set by | What it is for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| moh_av | Us | A random number that groups the pages of one visit, for our anonymous counts | 30 minutes |
| moh_theme | Us | Remembers if you chose Light or Dark (only if you choose one) | 1 year |
| moh_av_off | Us | Leaves a browser out of our counts (used by the site’s volunteers while they work on it) | 5 years |
| _ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics | Tells one visitor from another in Google’s reports | Up to 2 years |
| _fbp | Meta | Measures visits that come from Facebook and Instagram | 3 months |
The members’ area at members.mastersofharmony.org also uses a sign-in cookie for members who sign in.
Other services we link to or show
- YouTube. On our current pages a video shows a still picture until you press play; only then does the YouTube player load, in YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode. Some pages of our classic site (under /classic/) show the YouTube player straight away. YouTube’s own policy applies to its player.
- Tickets. Ticket links take you to the venue’s or presenter’s ticket seller (for example Ludus). What you give them is covered by their policy, not ours.
- Social media, maps and calendars. Links to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps or a calendar take you to those services, under their policies.
- Apparel shop. Our shop is run by Spreadshop, which handles orders and payment under its own policy.
Sign-ups and email
Mailing list. If you join our mailing list we keep your name, email address and ZIP code, and use them only to send you news about the Masters of Harmony, such as shows and events. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also write to info@mastersofharmony.org to be removed.
Guest sign-up. If you sign up to visit a rehearsal we keep what you tell us (name, email, phone, voice part, how you heard of us, a note) so the membership team can welcome you, and add you to the mailing list only if you ask.
Both forms are on our members’ site. Our emails are sent through Amazon Web Services. We never sell or share these addresses with anyone else.
Donations and purchases
Donations and CD orders are paid through PayPal. PayPal handles your card or bank details; we never see or store them. PayPal sends us your name, email, mailing address and what you gave or bought, which we keep for our records, to ship your order, and for donation acknowledgments and tax receipts.
Your choices
- You can block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings. The site still works without them.
- To opt out of Google Analytics on every site, use Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
- To control how Meta uses activity from other websites, use your off-Facebook activity settings or Meta’s ad preferences.
- Your browser’s “Do Not Track” setting is not currently read by this site. The choices above work whatever that setting is.
- To see, correct or delete what we hold about you (mailing list, guest sign-up, orders), write to info@mastersofharmony.org.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the date at the top. The earlier policy is kept for reference.
