Masters singers with their arms raised at the end of a song on the International stage

Sing with us

Sing with champions

Every Wednesday night in La Mirada. You don’t need an invitation, and you don’t need to decide anything by coming.

Come as you are

A part for every voice

The Masters of Harmony is a men’s chorus singing four-part barbershop harmony, unaccompanied. Some of the men on our risers have sung all their lives. Others hadn’t sung since school when they first walked in.

Sing if you would like to: there is a part that suits your voice and someone to stand next to. Or take a seat and listen to the whole evening. Plenty of people do that the first time, and nobody will ask which you came for.

Excellence

Expert coaching and the craft of nine-time International champions, every week.

Every voice welcome

All ages, backgrounds and levels of experience. You learn alongside friends.

No pressure

Come and sing, or just sit and listen. Nothing to decide by coming.

Your first Wednesday

Three easy steps

1

Tell us you’re coming

Use the form below and someone will watch for you, and be in touch with anything you need to know. Or simply turn up.

2

Walk in at 7:30

La Mirada United Methodist Church, 15700 Rosecrans Avenue. Bring nothing but yourself.

3

Sing or listen

Stand with a section and sing along, or sit back and take it all in. We will help you find your part.

Four voices, one chord

Which part are you?

Barbershop is sung in four parts. Not sure which is yours? Most people aren’t. Choose “Not sure yet” on the form, and we’ll find it together.

Tenor

The highest part, sung above the melody in a light, ringing voice.

Lead

Sings the melody and carries the story of the song.

Baritone

Fills in the chord, weaving above and below the lead.

Bass

The lowest notes: the foundation every chord is built on.

Questions

Good to know

Anything else on your mind? Email membership@mastersofharmony.org.

Do I need to read music?

Not to visit. Members learn their music from the sheet music and from learning tracks, recordings of each voice part, so you can learn by ear as well.

Is there an audition?

Not to visit. When you are ready to join the performing chorus there is an audition, taken a step at a time, with a mentor alongside you.

Who sings with the Masters?

Men from every walk of life, from their twenties to their eighties. Some have sung for decades; some walked in having not sung since school.

What does it cost?

Visiting is free. Members pay dues, and we will walk you through them if you decide to join.

How much of a commitment is it?

Members rehearse every Wednesday, perform in our Spring and Christmas shows and at other engagements through the year, and compete. Coming to visit commits you to nothing at all.

What should I bring?

Nothing but yourself. One request: if you are unwell, please stay home and come another week. Sixty people breathing in time is no place to be passing anything on.
